Someone’s commute became awesome.

I lichrully just posted that last night.

There are few things as mechanically satisfying as old steam.

No way! I live around this area. It's normally just the same old metrolinks but would this have been a sight to see.

Mmph those connecting rods at speed

Steam Locomotives are poetry in motion, just beautiful mechanical bliss

Is the Steam Locomotive just being pushed by the newer engine? Even so looks so cool.

nope - that big 1927 northern type 4-8-4 could likely outrun the diesel support motors.
![]() 01/17/2016 at 21:04 |

A Baldwin 4-8-4 methinks. Why is it teamed with a diesel?

Oh, hell yes.

I was just expecting a lot more soot from it.

Thats so cool! When my grandparents had a place in Pennsylvania, we used to go to a place called Steamtown and they would do train rides with the old steam locomotives

That Toyota though pacing it in the fast lane with it’s hazards on. Dick.
It’s funny how I always see cars in the U.S. choose a lane and just stay in it.

Indeed a Baldwin! Oldest surviving 4-8-4. It is used for excursions now, so I think that may be why it is paired with a diesel.

Absolutely beautiful. It’s one thing to see an old steam engine in a museum, but it is so much more special to see one still being used. Hard to believe this engine is almost 90 years old. Baldwin built some great locomotives.

Man that was awesome! I realized how awesome trains were seeing it hauling along the freeway.

Flat they are surprisingly clean and it’s an oil burner so even less soot - it could likely do 110-115 and the diesel is geared to probably 85. It did 103 on a previous excursion run.

Interesting to note that of all the machines moving in this video, only 3 are essentially the same as they were at the beginning of the last century, that AT&SF engine and the two HDs at 1:15.

Very cool. The Valley Railroad Company here in CT has 3 steamers in service; a 2-8-0 and a pair of 2-8-2 locos, one of which was built in China in 1989.
Yes. 1989.

That’s awesome. Did not know about the one built in 89 so I must look that up. Thanks for sharing!

This big Northern is barely breaking a sweat! Hardly ANY smoke is coming from the stack.
EDIT: If this is an excursion, how the hell do they only have 5 cars being pulled!? This would sell out with more than double that consist!

There was a Metrolink Impala behind him. I have a feeling they’re part of their chase crew, trying to keep traffic under control around it. I’ve chased locomotives multiple times, and you I’ve seen some of the dumbest drivers making the dumbest moves in order to be level with it.

The Toyota after three minutes comes out of lane four and goes into lane three with his hazards off. While he’s in lane four you car see him holding a camera or mobile phone up to his side window to record the train.

How to get 1up-ed while crusing in a vintage vehicle...
![]() 01/18/2016 at 03:54 |

As awesome as that locomotive is...
I just want to punch the people hovering next to it in all the lanes, drifting in and out of the frame for minutes on end. Passing on the right, left and center...
It’s time for lane etiquette lessons! :D Get into the right lane and form your own little train if you want to pace the loco.

I stand corrected. Steam locomotives bring out the dumb in so many people. It’s 100% mind-boggling.

Lol.
Train people tend to be either interesting or well, not so interesting but it can quickly go from one to the other.
I’m not really a train person but when I see a steam loco going through my city train station or through my county I can’t help but be impressed.
Though my city train station has a beautiful backdrop.

Thank you. I’m big into old steam engines and love learning about those I haven’t heard of. If you ever venture south, Galveston, TX and Chattanooga, TN both have a fairly nice railroad museum if you are into that sort of thing. Now if I can just get to one that has a UP Big Boy, I will die a happy man.

I guess you haven’t heard of UP’s restoration of a Big Boy? Check this out.

Yep! I knew about that one and would love to see it once finished. The closest two of the other 7 to where I live though are either in St. Louis or Frisco, TX, so would be a long drive from MS.
